2008 Summary for Veneer/Plywood and Other Board Mills

Lost-time injuries dropped from 68 in 2007 to 52 in 2008. The LTI frequency rate also declined from 1.74 injuries per 200,000 hours worked in 2007 to 1.68 injuries in 2008. Total hours worked fell from 7.8 million to 6.2 million over the same period, but days lost rose substantially from 29,575 to 34,799. The injury severity rate jumped from 755 to 1,105 lost days per 200,000 hours worked.

No-lost-time injuries in veneer/plywood and other board mills decreased from 286 in 2007 to 210 in 2008. The NLTI frequency rate fell to 6.67 in 2008 from 7.30 the year before.

48 (69%) of the 69 veneer/plywood and other board mills that operated in 2008 recorded zero lost-time injuries. 13 of the 27 firms that employed 20 or more full-time equivalent workers were LTI-free in 2008.

Strains, sprains and tears were by far the most common injuries in 2008, accounting for 43% of all LTIs, followed by cuts/lacerations (8%), amputations (6%), carpal tunnel syndrome (4%) and fractures (4%). The most common causes of injury were being struck by or against an object (22%), over-exertion (18%), bodily reaction (14%) and repetitive motion (14%).

The most frequently injured workers in veneer/plywood and other board mills in 2008 were labourers (39%), machine operators (27%), graders and inspectors (6%), millwrights and mechanics (4%) and heavy equipment operators (4%).
