2008 Summary for Silviculture and Other Forestry Services

Lost-time injuries increased slightly from 26 in 2007 to 29 in 2008. The LTI frequency rate rose from 4.26 injuries per 200,000 hours worked in 2007 to 6.99 injuries in 2008. Total hours worked declined from 932,140 in 2007 to 881,036 in 2008, yet days lost because of injuries jumped by more than a third, from 2,423 days in 2007 to 3,756 in 2008.

No-lost-time injuries also increased in 2008, to 95 from 66 in 2007. The NLTI frequency rate jumped to its highest level of the decade – 22.45 no-lost-time injuries per 200,000 hours worked.

Sprains, strains and tears accounted for 62% of lost-time injuries in silviculture operations in 2008, more than double the 28% rate in 2007. Fractures were the second most common injury type, accounting for 10% of LTIs in 2008.

The most frequently injured employees in silviculture in 2008 were labourers (34%), forestry technologists and technicians (21%) and supervisors (7%).
