Young Workers
Resources for young workers
Young and new forestry workers are especially vulnerable in two ways: They lack the experience to recognize and assess hazards, and they lack the self-assurance to confront their supervisor about safety lapses – assuming they recognize such lapses.
Most injuries among young and new workers occur within the first year of work. Statistics show a direct relationship between work experience and on-the-job injuries: The less experience you have, the more likely you are to get hurt in the workplace. Workplace injury is the second leading cause of death after motor vehicle incidents among young people. That's why employers' legal responsibilities toward young and new workers, including due diligence in protecting their health and safety, is so important. And that’s why these workers need to know their health and safety rights and responsibilities.
